I'm getting a lot of e-mail questions from readers, and also private messages on the blog's facebook page, which I answer privately. Sometimes I notice different readers have similar questions, so I guess it is time for a post. This one will be about tips for organizing your closet, which I get asked about a lot. I hope you enjoy!
1. Buy less stuff.
The less things you have, the easier it will be to organize them. non?(yeah, keep talking to yourself...)
2. Use quality and identical hangers.
This is the kind of tip you hear from people who have a luxurious walk in closet (not me).
It's a great idea but truth is I use all kinds of hangers and also have no problem at all using those plain wire hangers you get from the dry-cleaners. Lame, I know, but as long as you have enough room between hangers, so the clothes won't get wrinkled, it's good enough.
3. Put similar items next to each other.
The obsessive compulsive people among you can even arrange your wardrobe by color, which is amazing and very handy in case a Vogue teem comes to photograph your closet (happens every day).
In the mean time I keep similarity in proximity: t-shirts next to t-shirts, blouses with blouses, skirts with skirts. yada yada yada.
This way when I'm looking for a certain clothing item, I can see my whole selection in a specific category.
4. Use a clothing rack.
I definitely always opt for keeping things inside a closet (prevent them from collecting dust, and getting the random stain or being the target of your pet's attack).
But every serious fashion addict knows you can't help but have your closet expand outside it's limits.
When that's the case I would choose a nice heavy duty rack and put on it my fave stuff that are in high rotation at the moment - so that they will be easier to reach and put back.
5. Shoe storage:
I'd love to have a decent wall of shoes, and pretty sure I have the amount of shoes required, but not enough squre foot in the apartment to allocate for this kind of shoe place. So until that time arrives I'm using shoe boxes.
The important thing about boxes is to know what's inside them so don't forget to use a note and a picture - it really helps!
Found another nice idea for shoe storage (shown in the last pic above) - thinking of installing 3 shelves in my little laundry room for the shoes in high rotation. Only question regarding this is how am I keeping the cat from jumping on it and knocking all the shoes down???
That's it for now, hope you got a few ideas. Have a nice weekend!
